This one I also found at M50 gallery area Shanghai. I like the kind of multi layered sign: 3D letters in perspective view plus perspective distortion!?!? The name of the gallery is great anyway ;-)
( And of course there is a bit WoW in there.)

Digital Playground "Hack the City"

without comments

Nathalie Boseul SHIN curator at Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, South Korea invited me to run the WoW workshop/performance for this exhibition. “Digital Playground” is an annual media art exhibition started in 2005 at Eujeongbu International Media Art Festival. I am quite exited to run WoW in korean hangul letter system.

Digital Playground 2008 “Hack the City!”

Recently, the outlook of Seoul is rapidly changing. It means we are surrounded by ‘under construction’ sign boards. Seoul is under-construction. One day, we have the artificial river, Cheonggae-cheon” at the down town, huge buildings, parks. What is changing is not only outlook, but our daily life is also changed. It is no longer surprise thing or imagination to watch TV or talk with friends face to face.
Last year, Seoul city government announced big plan ‘Seoul city gallery project’ which is for making Seoul as the art city. Many art works are installed on the street, overpasses. People can enjoy art in the park. However, take the different perspective, and ask to ourselves. for what we need art installations in public spaces? Furthermore, what is purpose of art in that sense? There are many kinds of arts, but if we can say about contemporary ‘media’ art, it should be more clear about that question. As I quoted above, “artists alone can’t change the world”, but I believe “artists can make people see or think the other side of what is actually happening with artworks or projects”

It is time to “Hack the city!”
The word of ‘hack’ ing does not mean the specific media oriented act in the computer science. It is not used in negative way which is stealing personal information without permission, either. Rather it is right to say that this word is chosen in the metaphorical context: critical thinking, reconsider of our social system and technology. If people think the place/space where they live, reconsider about the technologies which they use everyday like mobile phone, become unfamiliar with familiar things, then we can say that we are close to make the world what we dream.

This project is consists of two parts. First part is related with actual data which artists get from Seoul city such as traffic flow, sound capture and transfer, some official statistic data. For this TMCA collaborated with media lab in universities. EWHA Womans University and Chungang University join with . Through regular meetings and discussions, they are developing new projects for “Hack the City.” The second part is closed to media activism and performance. Like Balettikka Internettikka from Slovenia and Graffitti Research Lab from USA, they go into the society in order to re-thinking about social system by the intervention and physical hacking. Nanna from Korea is doing performance of asking people to buy or sell their time in the public space. She gets into people, and gives them a chance to think their busy life, or time in philosophical sense. Aram Bartholl (from Germany) make workshop which connected with computer game, but in a very analogical way. The results of performance from the workshop, for sure, bring fresh air to the people who will meet them on the street. Also they have a chance to think about computer game or virtuality.

“Interventions” Lier, BE – pics and movie

without comments

“Interventions” at Voorkamer Lier, BE a week ago was great fun. Christian Hasucha “The Island” was already running for 2 weeks at the Grote Markt Lier. Anybody in the city good rent the island for free and enjoy the view into the city hall and on the market place for some hours. This piece poses the questions of view and beeing viewed. On Saturday 26.05.2007 Frank Bölter with “The German Revenge” and myself with “WoW” has been invited to do workshops and perform in public space. The simplicity of Franks ship and bomb wich he buildt together with a group of organized homeless people was really impressive. The symbolic bomb was dropped from the island on the market place. In the evening Helmut Dick held a lecture about his work in public space. Good stuff!

Laboral art center opening: Gameworld, Labcyberspace, Feedback

without comments

Laboral is a new art center in Gijon, Spain dedicated to media culture. Before arriving there nobody really knew how big this place was. The goverment of the province Asturias put a lot of money into this project and I am curious how it’ll develop in the next years. I have been invited to the game art show “Gameworld” one of three huge exhibitions which opened all on the same day 30.3.2007. The other two shows are called “Labcyberspace” which is the outcome of a competitionl and “Feedback”. All show are running till 1.7.2007.
I am showing “First Person Shooter”, the DIY glasses and the “WoW” video. As a small WoW performance I did walk my name during the opening . I met a lot of new people and had a really good time. The opening was huge. My favorite project was the “Sheepmarket” by Aaron Koblin in the Labcyberspace show. 10.000 sheep drawn by amazon users, printed on paper are hanging on the wall. Fantasic!

See my flickr pics of all three shows.

OPENCITY exhibition NYC documentation

without comments

Eyebeam and the Graffiti Research Lab invited me to be part of the exhibition OPEN CITY which took place at Eyebeam in NYC from end of Feburary till mid of April 2007. The subtitle ‘tools for public action’ describes very well the graffiti background of the show which opened up to a broader field of actions in public space. All artists and artist groups did show different kinds documentations and tools of their work. Among some project documentations I had two workshop tables: one where visitors could build their own pair of “First Person Shooter” glasses and a second which served for a “WoW” workshop.

Check out my pictures and all open city tagged pictures of the exhibition on flickr.

Find some more documentation of the exhibition at GRL

Thanks to Evan who edited and posted the “WoW” movie documentation of him and me getting a coffee at Frank’s on 9th avenue.

Thanks to the whole Eyebeam team and to GRL:Evan and James for having me at this great show.

"WoW" at ‘the game is up’ festival

without comments

The project “WoW” is a workshop and a performance. I did this piece with a group of 14 people at the ‘The Game is up’ festival at Vooruit (unfortunately no english version of theirs website) in Gent, Belgium in feburary this year.

“We are presenting a festival ‘the game is up! – about breaking rules and changing codes. we are inviting artists with very different backgrounds: theatermakers, performars, musicians and media-arts to present them in a 10day festival with performances, talks and an exhibition.”

Vooruit is a really big Arts Centre in a beautifull old building originally based in music, theater and performance but opend up to media art some years ago. The curators Eva de Groote and Tom Bonte doing a great job and they have a very friendly, proffessional and well organized team. I had a very good time there and I am very happy about the outcome of the project. Thanks to Greg Young who filmed the action and did the editing.

For everybody who haven’t seen the documentation yet find some pictures on flickr and a quicktime- or youtube movie below.
