Upcoming saturday I’ll present my work at this symposium. If you happend to be in Amsterdam drop by chek it out …

A symposium about quality in an age of visual overload

While museums are developing strategies to digitalise their collections, online cultural production is growing steadily, with hundreds of thousands of new images posted each day. A lot of potentially interesting work is being produced online, which never reaches the physical world. The distribution of this high quality work is increasingly decentralised, leaving museums, foundations and professional magazines at a loss on how to redefine their role as gatekeepers. On the other hand, the time spent daily behind the computer on internet networking is pushing the demand for a physical experience of our fleeting culture. Designers, artists, mediators and policy makers need to redefine their position, because new technologies define to a large extent today’s possibilities and means of presentation and archiving. The search is for new quality criteria, new frames of references, and alternative methods for enabling connections between the virtual and the physical space of today’s culture.

I enjoyed my one day trip to Kassel quite a lot. A nice modern concrete school from the 70ties is sitting right in the sunny parc in Kassel. It was a good experience to present and then really to discuss my work. An art school poses some more and critique questions then a usual audience in a conference. Afterwards the New Media class of Prof. Joel Baumann showed me some of their projects and we had more discussion.

Thanks a lot to Olaf Val, (assistant of the New Media class) for the invitation and good conversation. See you around Olaf!

I enjoyed an excellent list of 20:20 talks. Best I did like the live presentation of Oskar Zieta. Hilarious! Two welded metal plates blown up to a chair. I like that a lot. Just think of all the possibilities.

Urban Act presents a European network of practices who act within the urban public sphere as a place for political change and architectural practice, introducing their different projects, tools and methods. It not only locates and maps the activities of numerous practices, but is structured as a manual to allow insight into the methods of interventionist urban practice, like a user guide to “do-it-yourself urbanism”.
