Decoding the Black Box

27. January – 2. June 2024
Group Show, Galerie Stadt Sindelfingen, Sindelfingen

Stitch Incoming!!

25. March 2024
Curatorial, Speed Show at Web Cafe, Athens

Monday 25th of March, 7:00 PM at Web Cafe, Eptanisou 40, 113 61 , Kypseli – Athens

with:
!Mediengruppe Bitnik with Selena Savić & Gordan Savičić , Ingrid Hideki, Joanna Bacas, Kyriaki Goni, Maria Mavropoulou, Marina Gioti, Marsunev, Nadja Buttendorf, Theo Triantafyllidis

Curated by Aram Bartholl & Socrates Stamatatos

Speed Show lands in Greece, the country of souvlaki, the sun (yes we can claim that they originated a celestial body), ouzo, feta, an enormous financial debt. Currently, Greece is also trending for all the wrong reasons namely, gentrification, queerphobia, state crimes and more dystopic incidents.
As 2024 unfolds, we find ourselves amidst a whirlwind of confusion, bombarded with a cacophony of online horrors to consume, an attention span further abbreviated by TikTok’s algorithm and the barrage of incoming stitches.

Stitches Incoming serve as a conduit for creators to engage and converse, traversing from one topic to the next. They have evolved into a new social fabric, weaving connections within an ever-shifting digital and physical landscape while also serving as a testament to personal and collective traumas, both past and present.

What unites the participating digital artists? Perhaps everything and nothing simultaneously… Departing from the traditional Speed Show setup, where artworks are carefully stacked inside internet cafe computers, and drawing inspiration from the structure of TikTok stitches, each piece seems to propel the conversation forward, or perhaps uses the next as a springboard for its own narrative.

Stitch this and stitch that, we have everything you ever wanted (maybe) ! Are we stuck in an infinite loop of sh*tposting, valuable content, the highlight of social issues, personal and interpersonal experiences?
Maybe! Come and find out…

“Space Time Play” book presentation

October 31, 2007

The editors of “Space Time Play”: Friedrich von Borries, Steffen P. Walz and Matthias Böttger presented their new book yesterday at the book store Pro-QM Berlin. The media theorist Stephan Günzel and myself have been invited to join the presentation and to talk about our work. The book is a collection of over 180 different articles of 140 different authors on the relationship of computer games, space and architecture. A must read for everybody who works in this field.

“SPACE TIME PLAY” IS A JOURNEY
THROUGH THE PAST, PRESENT
AND POTENTIAL SPACES OF
COMPUTER AND VIDEO GAMES.

Have you ever wondered what’s behind a perfect Tetris-wall?
Have you ever freed a 3D world from terrorists?
Have you ever made polygon friends in networked fantasy realms?
And do you know what happens when these games never end?

Lab30 pics

October 30, 2007

The Lab30 festival was a lot of fun. Good projects, nice people and fun workshops. I got a nanoloop cartridge for my gameboy from oliver. 8bit sound rulez! I did love the show of Gameboymusicclub. Finally I saw Juliens Demi-pas performance, amazing. Jana Linke did win the lab30 award with the project click and glue, congrats. On saturday we had 4 workshops: nanoloop programming by Gameboymusicclub, overheadbot workshop by Ralf Schreiber and Christian Faubel and
, Jeff Mann‘s LiveForm:Telekinetics workshop and my Random Screen workshop. Of course there were many more interesting projects to see and to hear.

Take a look at the full program and all my pics on flickr.

October 23, 2007

I just updated the Sandbox Berlin page with new pictures. Although this pic was taken during Sandbox Berlin I am not showing it on the sandbox page. I still have the Google “Map” marker in my “Inventory”, so I took the opportunity to set it up during the sandbox workshop.

Nice pic, thx Ariel!

Sandbox Berlin – Pics

October 10, 2007

Sandbox Berlin workshop last week was great fun. Before we started I gave a lecture on Second Life sandbox phenonemon at NewBerlin flaggstore at brand new Alexa shopping center. Tobias an Jan have a great off space within this bizzar shopping mall. The following 2 days we were busy building a series of different geometrical objects relating to Second Life sandbox. The formerly part of Berlin Wall is a classic non defined space and perfect spot to create a Sandbox. We had many interesting conversations and reactions with people from the neighbourhood. I also took the opportunity to put up my Google map pin from project Map which I still had in my inventory 😉

It’s fun to see how objects are moved or manipulated over the night. The yellow cube became a house with a “door” and four “windows” in the first night. I am curious for the result on sunday.

Gino who is living next to the sandbox offered me to reuse the sandbox wood after the exhibition for his 100 meter, 4 tracks slotcar racing track he is setting up with some friends. Perfect transformation for theSandbox Berlin.

Sandbox exhibition is still running till sunday 14.10.07. Don’t miss it.

All the pics of Sandbox Berlin on flickr.
